Environmental Compliance
Waste Management strives to be a good environmental citizen and to not only meet but exceed all applicable regulations. These goals are reflected in the services we provide to customers, the design and operation of our facilities, the conditions under which employees work and our interactions with the communities where we live and do business.
Waste Management's Environmental Management Department assists Waste
Management employees and our customers in meeting EPA, DOT and state
and local government regulations, as well as preparing for any new regulations
or regulatory changes. Waste Management operations personnel are updated
on new regulatory requirements as these provisions go into effect. This
helps ensure that our customers avoid fines and citations due to non-compliance.
The following principles apply to Waste Management operations nationwide:
Environmental Protection
We conduct all operations in a manner that protects the environment
and our employees, neighbors and customers.
Pollution Prevention
We proactively work to implement procedures and programs to prevent
pollution.
Compliance
We comply with all legal requirements and proactively implement programs
and procedures to ensure compliance.
Conservation
We practice and promote the conservation of nature and the earth's energy
resources.
Communication
All Waste Management employees are responsible for helping helping to promote best practices and continually improve customer service throughout the organization.
Accountability
Employees will never be at risk for identifying environmental and safety
issues. Suspicion of violations of law or of Waste Management's Core
Values of Ethical Conduct and Practices shall be communicated in accordance
with the company's Ethical Conduct Communication policy.
Financial Commitment
The company will provide adequate resources to meet its environmental
and human health obligations and will never sacrifice environmental
or safety quality for cost reasons.
Compliance with regulatory requirements is just the beginning of Waste
Management's leadership in promoting good and responsible use of land,
air and water. Mere compliance is not acceptable - Waste Management
strives to surpass compliance goals in order to stand out as an environmental
leader.
Waste Management recognizes that if we are to achieve our environmental
performance goals, our employees must possess the knowledge and skills
to manage and conduct operations in environmentally responsible ways.
All new employees participate in Corporate Ethics and Compliance training, which outlines our global standards for environmental practices.
